Getting Your Morning Right – 7 Tips
Not all those who wander are lost… sometimes they are just trying to find coffee – Unknown
Mornings are hard. Except for those lucky few that love mornings, the rest of us just struggle through it. But there are a couple of things we can do in our mornings that will set us up for our day better. Not everyone likes to start their mornings the same way, but everyone can benefit from having an enjoyable morning. Getting your morning right depends on how you can see yourself starting your day. Below are some ideas that might help you to create your most enjoyable mornings
Put your clothes and gym gear out the night before
Putting your clothes out the night before removes the need to go through your closet each morning. Doing this will allow you to have nice outfits picked out for the day and give you more time in the morning for other tasks.
Play some music
Lots of us are so rushed in the mornings that we don’t really think about putting some music on. But playing music in the morning can help boost your mood and give you a little more energy while getting ready. Putting yourself in a better frame of mind before you leave the house can set the rest of your day up for success. Some people have morning playlists, and others will just play what they feel like, which can be include nature sounds. Whatever you decide, it will create a much more enjoyable environment for you while you are getting ready.
Get up earlier
Again, this is hard, I know! But getting up an extra 10 minutes earlier can really allow you to ease into your day, rather than abruptly jumping out of bed and running out the door. You can also designate this 10 minutes for a specific thing like stretching, checking your phone or making your coffee. Pick something that you will look forward to and therefore want to get up for.
Try some yoga
Our body’s naturally want to stretch when we first wake up. Which makes sense because after laying so long in one position our muscles will be wanting some movement. As mentioned above, adding 10 minutes to stretch is a great addition to the morning! It gets the blood flowing, and also gets your mind ready for your busy day. I recommend having a place where you can keep your mat out so it is ready to go in the morning. I have a little fireplace that I turn on in the morning and stretch in front of and it is very relaxing! I find the ambient light helps me slowly wake up rather than just flicking all the lights on.
Put your coffee mug out
Many people like to have coffee first thing in the morning. If you are one of those people, making sure your cup is cleaned and put out on the counter the night before will make it quicker for you to get your coffee ready and get on with the day.
Make your lunch the night before
Using leftovers is the best way to have a lunch ready for the next day. But if you are planning on having something like a salad or sandwich, making that the night before and leaving it in the fridge will also greatly decrease the amount of time it take you to get ready. Also having a lunch ready to grab in the morning will reduce your chances of forgoing making a lunch and instead buying a lunch out. Brown bagging your lunches is considered one of the better ways to save money, so in this case, your wallet will also be happy!
Setting your intention
This is something I don’t think many people do. We are so rushed in the mornings, it is easy to slip into auto-pilot just to get ready and out the door. But taking a minute to think about what you want out of the day will change how you go about your daily activities, and will change your frame of mind. Thinking of a positive intention for the day, such as completing a task you have been working on, spending some time on a hobby or making it to a gym session will allow you to really feel good once you meet these goals. Doing this can also allow you to think about how you might want to change your days, and what your long term goals are.
Getting your morning right really comes down to what you want to get out of your morning. If you are looking for a little extra time to yourself, then getting up 10 minutes earlier might be your solution. If you are looking to be more efficient with your mornings, then having your lunch and clothing set out the night before might help. Mornings are hard enough as it is, so you owe it to yourself to make them easier in any way possible.
