How to be a Passionate Person in a World that is Exhausting
The world is a tough place. We are constantly having ads, ideas, opinions, and news thrown at us. Combine that with a job you may not find perfect, it is easy to slip into a dull routine of work and TV time.
But there are things that we are passionate about. Whether we know what they are already or are still looking, we each have our own interests. So how do we keep this passion in an exhausting world?
This also isn’t to suggest that the thing you are passionate about doing is the ONLY thing you should to be doing. It also isn’t to say that you must be absolutely “PASSIONATE” about something either, you can simply just like doing it. So really, the question is – how do we continue to enjoy life to the fullest in a world full of negativity?
Focus on you, your life, your family, and your work. Reading the news every day, or listening to negative people can start to feel a bit like a black hole of negativity which you may never get out of. If you remain focused on the things you like spending time on, then you create less opportunity for other distractions that will take you off course.
DON’T COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHERS
I have said it before and I will say it again, “comparison is the thief of joy”. We each have our own unique approaches to the things we are passionate about. The second we start comparing to other people who are working at the same passion, we lose the spark for our own progress or work based on this idea that we are not good enough. Unless you are making your living from your passion (and maybe not even then), it is not necessary to be the best at something for you to enjoy it.
TAKE AN INTERNET BREAK
Man, this feels so good. I usually get an internet break if I am out hiking or going camping for a weekend. It lets you fully enjoy the activities that you are doing. This means shutting off the news, not checking your email or social media apps, and just being present in the moment. We often don’t realize the effect of seeing negative news every day all day until we take a break from it for a while and end up with a completely different and refreshed mindset.
UNDERSTAND THAT EVERYTHING IS TEMPORARY
Especially our hardships. Things pass with due time, and so while you may be overwhelmed with recent events or an encounter with a person, this will pass. And once it does, you can take this time to get back to the activities that interest you. You also may change your passion throughout life, but this is okay. Just the act of doing things that you like will enrich your life greatly, whether that always stays as one thing or changes over time.
TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF
It is always important to practice self-care and take time for yourself, but this is especially true if your passion involves some form of advocacy. Understand that you are doing your best, and that doesn’t mean doing everything all the time. You can take breaks. Even if this means being a blob and watching Netflix all weekend. Whether you are advocating for the rights of wildlife, or trying to write your next book, a break can be good for you.
Being a passionate person is hard work. Especially if you intend to make a living from it. In a world where we are subjected to a great amount of negativity, it can be easier to just let things go by watching TV. We can shut our brains off and let what’s happening on the screen entertain us. But what is the point of life if that’s all we do. There is much more creativity to be had on this planet. There are more ideas to be generate, and more positive outlooks to be shared.
Stay true to your passion. It is one of the most unique things about who you are, and this is not something easily replicated. It has value in this world, and the world could use more of it. Yes, the world may be an exhausting place, but you are not tired yet.
